GreanBase was formed in March 2011 and following the success of the Wheelbarrow Booster in 2012 on national TV Shows such as The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Dragons Den, the company became inundated by fellow gardeners with their own ideas. Coupled with the ability to bring other people’s inventions to reality, the Grumpy Gardener Range was born.
How We Started – A Family Business
Formed in 2011 father and son Michael and Joe Smith created GreanBase Ltd to try and take an invention named the “Wheelbarrow Booster” to market. With over 35 years experience as a professional landscaper (with Joe assisting him from a young age working weekends and school holidays) Michael knew what tools worked best in his daily job and they wanted to share these with other people
Following appearances on Dragons Den and the Alan Titchmarsh Show the “Grumpy Gardener Range” was born as the company continued to invent new products and sometimes partnered with other gardeners who wanted to make their invention a reality.
Where we are now;
Following those formative years GreanBase have now sold over a million products on 4 different continents and can often be found on television shopping retailers such as QVC UK / USA / Germany, HSN, TSC (Canada) and TVSN (Australia.)
By truly innovating the Grumpy Gardener range now covers garden tools, decor, planters and wild bird. Grumpy Gardener mantra aims to bring quality unique products to the marketplace whilst also looking after the wildlife.
Grumpy Gardener Tools
Following 2011 GreanBase have continued to invent dozens of new garden tools. With the aim of unique or modernisation the Grumpy Gardener Range includes weeders / shovels / trowels / hoes and grass shears all of which can only be found through our website or select partners. Popular lines include the Digamathing, the Cultimate Weeder and the Wonder Shovel which have gained GreanBase a reputation as the fastest growing new garden tool developer in the UK.
Decor (Jennings)
As a true family business Sarah Jennings (wife to Joe) joined GreanBase in 2014 to develop / establish and grow the decorative side of the company. With an education in art and design the “Jennings” mandate was to create unique garden pieces that cover the English Cottage to the Contemporary. Pieces often start with a hand drawing and then are developed to completion, these designs cover Nutpecker Bird Feeders, garden sculptures to indoor / outdoor Christmas and Halloween decorations. Recently the “Jennings” decorative Animal and Xmas stool characters have exploded in America with them fast becoming collectors items on QVC USA whilst even young Isabella (the daughter to Joe & Sarah) has had her bird feeding Idea’s created and sold to the public.
Planters
As a nation of container gardeners GreanBase are committed to producing decorative and colourful yet lightweight planters that help our established plants flourish whilst being easy to move when necessary. Many of our planter look heavy and ceramic but are actually lightweight / easy to move and less likely to be damaged by the changing seasons. Starting from 12″ planters all the way up to XXL 20″ units we feel there will be a design of planter for every type of garden.
Nutpecker Peanut Butter
Born from necessity!! Nutpecker Peanut Butter bird food is a highly nutritious no mess food consisting of 25% peanuts and 25% peanut oils, it is the highest quality wild bird peanut butter in the marketplace at present. Following an encounter between Sarah and a small furry creature underneath a standard bird feeder (which was immediately disposed) the family needed a way to continue to feed the birds without anything dropping to the floor.
Subsequently GreanBase embarked on designing feeders that would suit the smaller UK song birds and now offer the largest variety of feeders and food within the UK starting at economy single feeders to premium decorative hand designed polyresin units.
Wild Bird
It was a few years ago whilst developing Nutpecker that GreanBase decided that standard bird food just wasn’t good enough, being pet lovers and having an enjoyment of the wildlife GreanBase found that many “foods” consisted of fillers and lacked nutrition for our feathered friends. Since then we have partnered with leading UK manufactures in Bird
Foods to create exclusive premium / deluxe bird food recipes that cannot be found elsewhere. Whilst being aware that Grumpy Gardener Bird Foods will never compete on price with lower end foods we have found that the UK market is prepared to pay for true quality foods to enjoy and feed the birds with over 15,000,000 individual fatballs being sold on QVC UK alone since 2019.
